Cairo’s oldest area is the Coptic Christian area, which has five churches, the first mosque built in Egypt, the oldest synagogue in the country, and the ruins of Roman fortifications. Mark is believed by scholars to have come to Alexandria to spread the gospel through Egypt. The history of Christianity in Egypt dates to just a few decades after Jesus died. ![]() With its Ottoman-influenced architecture, the mosque resembles the Blue Mosque of Istanbul, another monument of Islam. Built in the 1800s, the mosque is one of the first buildings visible when approaching the city. That's the other gripping aspect of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother: There's method to Chua's madness - enough method to stir up self-doubt in readers who subscribe to more nurturing parenting styles. Chua's voice is that of a jovial, erudite serial killer - think Hannibal Lecter - who's explaining how he's going to fillet his next victim, as though it's the most self-evidently normal behavior. In her new memoir, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, Chua recounts her adventures in Chinese parenting, and - nuts though she may be - she's also mesmerizing. ![]() What kind of a mother? The author is a professor of biology, and her vast knowledge of the subject shines through in the descriptions of parthenogenic reproduction and marine life. The book does have positive features, making my dislike of it all the more frustrating. I don't think that this lazy broad-brush ecofeminism does women any favors, as it continues to relegate femininity to the realms of body/emotion/instinct rather than allowing for logic or intellectual choice. ![]() Slonczewski equates femininity with every positive attribute possessed by any of the characters: the all-female Sharers are nurturing, generous, telepathic, gentle, and in all respects aligned with nature masculinity is essentialized as purely brutish, destructive, and selfish. ![]() The plot is offensively gender-reductive. I wanted to, and instead ended up throwing it across the room at several points in my reading. I am well-versed in the canon of women SF/fantasy writers. In fact, feminist science fiction is my most beloved literary subgenre. I want to preface the rest of my review by saying I am deeply feminist. I loathe this book with an ungodly passion. ![]() 5/12/2023 0 Comments Kings of wrath ana huang![]() ![]() Neither was the worst thing she could possibly do: fall in love with her future husband.
